English-language phraseological nominations of persons in modern German: a gender aspect

Abstract

The study aims to identify the gender characteristics of the lexicographic and discursive representation of English-language phraseological nominations of persons in modern German. The work is novel in that it is the first one to examine the issues of gender specificity of lexicographic and discursive integration into German of phraseological nominations of persons, which are direct borrowings from English. The results obtained showed that the main explanatory dictionaries of modern German have not developed unified principles of lexicographic representation of gender-marked English-language phraseological nominations of persons, primarily feminatives. In modern German-language media, feminine and gender-inclusive forms of English-language nominations of persons, not reflected in dictionaries, are widespread as marketing tools, the main property of which is the expression of a politically correct attitude towards all people, regardless of the gender roles they fulfill. The variational potential of English-language phraseological nominations of persons is revealed only through observation of modern discursive practices, for which concepts such as political correctness and inclusivity are of paramount importance.
