A passage on the fall of Satan and the battle with Michael from a Coptic palimpsest in the Vatican Library (Vat. Copt. 65 f. 117-118)

Abstract

This article analyses a Coptic passage preserved on a 9th-century palimpsest in the Vatican Library. The purpose of the study is to identify the content features of the passage devoted to the fall of Satan and the Archangel Michael. For the first time a translation of this passage into Russian is introduced into the scientific community. The scientific novelty of the study lies in the identification of common Christian and original elements. The translated passage most likely belongs to an apocryphal work. In relation to Michael, the Coptic author mentions various epithets (Old Testament, New Testament and original Coptic), uses eschatological images and describes the attributes of the archangel. The results have shown that the Coptic passage contains an original tradition that is not attested not only in other traditions, but also in the Coptic tradition itself. It is a reference to Satan’s envy of Michael and the latter’s punishment for snorting: his nose became like a bullock’s. Moreover, the existence of the text of which the fragment under study was a part confirms that in the Coptic Church not only the sermon of John of Paralos spoke against a number of apocryphal ideas concerning Michael, but this opinion was also represented in the apocryphal literature itself.
