Linguo-pragmatic mechanisms of power legitimization in crisis situations: based on German parliamentary discourse

Abstract

The research aims to identify the linguo-pragmatic mechanisms for the legitimization of power by representatives of the ruling coalition and the federal government of Germany in crisis situations. The research is novel in that it is the first one to identify universal and unique linguo-pragmatic mechanisms for the legitimization of power in German parliamentary discourse, to establish the dependence of the choice of self-defense tactics, illocutionary acts, and stylistic devices on the type of crisis and party affiliation, and to systematize the patterns of speech behavior of political actors in various crisis contexts. The strategy of self-defense, understood as a universal mechanism for the legitimization of power in crisis situations, is highlighted as the central analytical tool. As a result of the research, it was found that the strategy of self-defense in crisis situations finds expression in shifting the emphasis from individual protection to collective protection and moving away from criticism of opponents in favor of appealing to solidarity. New self-defense tactics that are new for crisis parliamentary communication have been identified and substantiated: acknowledging mistakes and willingness to take corrective actions. It has been proven that the application of justification tactics and the predominance of representative and directive speech acts are universal mechanisms for the legitimization of power in crisis situations. Unique mechanisms have been identified that allow political actors to adapt speech behavior to the specifics of each crisis in response to changing public expectations and challenges.
