The intermediary text and its impact on the target culture: Drouzhinin’s case

Abstract

The aim of this piece of research is to define the type of the intercultural communication as it shaped itself in A. V. Drouzhinin’s summary translation (1851-1852) of J. Boswell’s “Life of Samuel Johnson” (1791) as an intermediary text, which had a definitive impact on the Russian reception of Dr. Johnson’s personality and his work (1709-1784) as the mastermind of the age of English Enlightenment. The scholarly innovativeness of the project lies in the fact of highlighting, by means of applying the Reception Theory approach to the research of translations and rewritings of the works about Dr. Johnson, the key intermediary text in the intercultural communication and defining its role for the subsequent reception of the writer in Russia. Drouzhinin’s work is analyzed at the historical-and-literary, as well as semantic and stylistic levels. The shifts in meaning from Boswell’s biography to Drouzhinin’s interpretation of Dr. Johnson are revealed by means of relating the target and the source texts. By quoting several relevant examples, the author of the article follows the further build-on Drouzhinin’s representation of Johnson by certain Russian journalists and critics. The piece of research results in proving the scholarly correctness of defining Drouzhinin’s summary translation as the intermediary text, which produced a decisive impact on the further reception of Dr. Johnson in Russia. The type of intercultural communication found in Drouzhinin’s opus has been defined as a conflated one resulting in the indifference of the Russian culture towards translating the central critical works of Dr. Johnson.
