Transposition of plot motifs in Bharavi’s Sanskrit poem “Kiratarjuniya” (6th century AD)

Abstract

The research aims to provide a more comprehensive picture of how the canon was developed and enriched in medieval Eastern literatures through the dialogue between medieval authors and their ancient predecessors. To this end, the study examines manifestations of non-stylizing imitation in medieval Sanskrit mahakavya poems at the plot level. The scientific novelty lies in the fact that poems before and after the 6th century AD have typically not been viewed as qualitatively different or as belonging to distinct ancient and medieval literary periods. Until now, the issue of plot borrowings from ancient mahakavya in medieval ones has remained virtually unexplored. This article is the first to propose extending the methodology developed for other medieval literatures to the analysis of the Indian mahakavya. The plot of Bharavi’s poem (6th century AD) was compared with its pre-literary source and the ancient poems of Ashvaghosa (1st-2nd centuries AD) and Kalidasa (4th-5th centuries). The results of the study identify Bharavi’s transposition of plot motifs from these ancient poems. This transposition was dictated not only by literary rivalry but also by the task of aligning the original fabula – which was not ideally suited for a mahakavya – with the requirements of the genre’s canon by incorporating plot elements from classical texts of Antiquity.
