The metamodernist specificity of the embodiment of the theme of mental disorder in the novel “The Marriage Plot” by J. Eugenides

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to identify the features of metamodernism in the novel “The Marriage Plot” (2011) by J. Eugenides, which are conditioned by the medicalization of discourse, in particular the theme of mental disorder. The article examines the process of character transformation into a medical object through the use of medical terms. The main aspects of the novel’s problems associated with the medicalization of discourse are highlighted. It is found that in this literary context, the understanding of human vulnerability, as well as the characteristics of physiological and mental processes, come to the fore. The scientific originality of the research lies in the fact that this article, for the first time in Russian literary studies, offers a systematic examination of the features of the medicalization of discourse in the context of metamodernism in the novel “The Marriage Plot”, which allows us to fit the work into a broad cultural and historical context. Given the insufficient study of the medicalization of discourse in modern foreign literature, the proposed article seems extremely timely. As a result, it is proven that the poetics of the novel “The Marriage Plot” is built on the principles of metamodernist aesthetics. This is confirmed by key tendencies identified in the text – a turn toward affect, psychologism, and reflection – while the medicalization of discourse creates conditions in which the body is perceived as a medical object and a person’s mental state is interpreted as a medical problem. A new psychological approach to literature has been discovered: Leonard’s physical state is determined by his mental state, which is a clear embodiment of metamodernism.
