History, main tendencies, and prospects of Sebald literary studies

Abstract

The aim of the study is to identify the main tendencies and patterns in scholarly works devoted to the oeuvre of W. G. Sebald, a German-language author of the second half of the 20th – early 21st centuries. The article reviews a corpus of the most important and representative Western European (English and German) and Russian academic studies. The scientific originality lies in the fact that, for the first time, the research field of Sebald studies has been holistically systematized, taking into account its thirty-year history of development. As a result, the chronological and thematic specifics of scholarly publications have been determined, which makes it possible to identify the general tendency in Sebald studies at the present moment – the fragmented nature of scholarly reception. A stable structure of the research field is revealed: its “core” is formed by works devoted to the themes of trauma, memory, melancholy, the Holocaust, the intermedial interaction of text and images, as well as the genre specificity of the novels; its “periphery” comprises studies on plurilingualism and intertextuality, along with narratological and comparative analyses. It can be argued that in recent years a shift of interest has been emerging from the central themes towards the peripheral aspects of the poetics of the works.
