Mechanisms of meaning-generation in the utterance “The horror! The horror!” (J. Conrad’s “Heart of Darkness”)

Abstract

The research aims to identify the meaning-generating potential of Kurtz’s dying utterance, “The horror! The horror!”. The approaches to studying the issues of meaning formation in 20th-century European and Russian humanities are outlined. The paper describes and compares two models of meaning-generation developed within post-structuralist text theory and Yuri Lotman’s theory of the semiosphere. The scientific originality of the research lies in the results obtained from analyzing the mechanisms of meaning generation in Kurtz’s exclamation. The conditions and factors of meaning-generation are identified: the discrepancy between the status of the utterance and its semantic emptiness, intertextuality, and the figure of the unreliable narrator. Two main theses are substantiated: 1) in the post-structuralist model, Kurtz’s exclamation appears as a floating signifier (Jacques Lacan), which is assigned meanings in an open-ended process of intertextual dialogue, independent of the author’s will; 2) in Lotman’s theory, the utterance acts as a highly semiotic text that generates new meanings at the intersection of the author’s intent, the addressee, and shifting cultural contexts. As a demonstrative result, the paper presents a series of interpretations of the novella based on Kurtz’s final words and correlated with the two investigated meaning-generating models.
