Country estate as a feature of national color in P. G. Wodehouse's novel "Jeeves and the Feudal Spirit"

Abstract

The aim of the research is to identify the artistic functions of the image of a country estate as a key component of national color ("Englishness") in P. G. Wodehouse's novel "Jeeves and the Feudal Spirit". The article examines the social and everyday aspects of English life reflected in the novel and reveals the role of the estate topos in creating an idyllic, nostalgic image of "Merry England". Within the framework of an imagological approach, the representation of such markers of English identity as aristocratic estates, servants, family ties (aunts), and the gentleman's code is analyzed. The scientific novelty of the research lies in the fact that, for the first time based on the late novel of the Jeeves saga, it is proven that the image of Brinkley Court is not only a plot-forming element, but also a symbolic embodiment of mythologized "Englishness," combining a patriarchal feudal order, comic absurdization, and a nostalgic idyll. The results obtained showed that the country estate in Wodehouse's novel performs a worldview function of refuge from reality, acting as a source of the comic through the clash of Bertie Wooster's "vassal" loyalty with Aunt Dahlia's absurd demands; at the same time, typological parallels are established with the country house novel and the idyllic chronotope of the estate in C. Dickens's works. National color permeates all levels of the narrative, and the country house becomes a concentrated expression of mythologized "Englishness".
