Generational portraits of the female protagonists in Kate Atkinson’s novel “Behind the Scenes at the Museum”

Abstract

The study aims to identify the specific features of the generational portraits of the female protagonists in Kate Atkinson’s novel “Behind the Scenes at the Museum”. The article examines character portraiture from a comparative perspective as a vehicle for representing generational identity. Within the operational definition of a “generational portrait”, the portraits of Alice, Nell, Bunty, and Ruby are delineated and analyzed in correlation with Britain’s generational cycles: the Victorian generation, the “surplus women” generation, the People’s War generation, and the baby boomer generation. The scientific novelty of the study lies in introducing and operationalizing the concept of the “generational portrait” for the first time using Kate Atkinson’s novel as empirical material, as well as systematizing the national adaptation of the American generational framework to the British historical context. The findings demonstrate that Atkinson’s portraiture technique evolves alongside the generational shift – transitioning from a dense psychological portrait to a diffuse impressionistic portrait. Furthermore, the details of the generational portrait are transmitted not only through biological lineage but also via fictive kinship, enabling the category of the generational portrait to register both continuity within the family lineage and the repercussions of its rupture.
