“Comedies after Plautus” as a preparatory stage in the work of J. M. R. Lenz

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to establish which consistent themes and concerns of the German writer J. M. R. Lenz’s subsequent work are already present in the early “Comedies after Plautus”. The article analyzes all six of Lenz’s adapted translations of the Roman playwright’s plays, one of which is the first in Russian literary science. The study’s scientific novelty also lies in determining the extent to which the biographical circumstances and ideological principles of one of the leaders of the Sturm und Drang movement shaped the choice of Plautus’s primary sources for creative adaptation. As a result, it has been established that Lenz contributed features of his own worldview to Plautus’s naive realism in which Christian-Pietist precepts were combined with a Sturm und Drang protest against rigid ethical and aesthetic norms, social and gender inequality, the institutionalized falsehood of interpersonal relationships. The “Comedies after Plautus” map out many of the themes and leading motifs of Lenz’s later works. The conflict of a young man with the dominant figure of father, concern about social injustice, intolerance to marriage as well as friendship of convenience, rejection of excessive masculinity and the humiliated position of women, preaching of premarital chastity coupled with the recognized impossibility of completely taming the flesh – Lenz tries to find all this in his distant predecessor and, as a rule, he succeeds.
