The role of the translator in the era of digitalization: new requirements and competencies

Abstract

The aim of the research is to theoretically substantiate and systematize new professional competencies for future translators in the context of the digitalization of translation activities, in order to improve their professional training. The article examines key changes in the translator’s profession under the influence of information technology, machine translation systems, and artificial intelligence. Special attention is paid to the formation of new professional requirements and competencies, enshrined in the professional standard “Specialist in the Field of Translation”. Modern approaches to collaborative translation and the use of digital tools in translation practice are analyzed. The scientific novelty of the research lies in the systematization of modern requirements for the set of professional competencies of translators (collaborative, digital, technological, adaptive) and the development of recommendations for their integration into educational programs. As a result of the research, it was established that for successful adaptation to the conditions of the digital economy, translators need to combine traditional linguistic knowledge with technological competencies, such as proficiency in CAT-tools (computer-assisted translation tools), machine translation systems, and post-editing skills. At the same time, the human factor remains critically important when working with complex texts that require a deep understanding of the cultural context and a creative approach.
